ChoirmasterChoirmaster Weisz starts the conversation before you have opened your mouth to speak.
Choirmaster"Your Lordship/Ladyship, I have something for you." The Choirmaster hands you a sheet of paper with uniform lines of machine type etched into it. "Thanks to your assistance in repairing the compiler, we have been able to interpret a most curious message. It contains a call sign that agents of the renegade Voigtvir used in their especially important reports."
YOU"Could it be a message from Voigtvir?"
Choirmaster"He was more likely the intended recipient."
YOU"Could it be a message from Voigtvir?"continues where this line first appears above
YOU"When was the signal sent?"
Choirmaster"I cannot say with certainty, Your Lordship/Ladyship. Following the repair work, I went through texts that had defied decoding before. This signal had lost its way in the bowels of the mechanism. It could be a week old, or years."
YOU"Could it be a message from Voigtvir?"continues where this line first appears above
YOU"When was the signal sent?"continues where this line first appears above
YOU"What does the message say?"
Choirmaster"Only a few words. 'Lillamedh. Odaenathus XI. The winds have ceased. It is done.' Now 'Lillamedh' is Voigtvir's call sign for special reports, but the rest is a code we are unfamiliar with. That said, we know where to look for the truth: the Odaenathus XI System."

YOU"I will deal with the report. Right now there is something else I want to discuss with you."
Choirmaster"Pity..." The Choirmaster's shoulders go limp and his face resumes its usual sullen expression. "I was hoping that curious dispatch would distract you from the dangerous idea that brought you here, and I would not have to implore you to reconsider."
YOU"Get out of my thoughts, Weisz. This is your first and last warning."
ChoirmasterThe Choirmaster makes a wry face, as though you have caught him doing something reprehensible. "Apologies, Your Lordship/Ladyship. It was... force of habit. I swear I will never again intrude upon your mind's peace without permission."
Choirmaster"Your predecessor came to me with the same orders once. Nothing good came of it. Please believe me, Lord Captain, when I say a mountain of corpses was the least of the problems we faced that time."
YOU"Has the selected candidate arrived yet?"
Choirmaster"Lady Vyatt has already begun to prepare for the ritual." Weisz points to the dark red inscriptions in an unfamiliar language. "I sense a strange and distant power in these glyphs... An otherworldly, unholy might... And I pray to the Emperor that you know what you are doing."
Vistenza Vyatt"Thank you for this opportunity to serve for your dynasty's benefit, Your Lordship/Ladyship." Vistenza bows before you with a radiant smile. "Your invitation was incredibly thrilling. I do not often get a chance to leave Janus."
YOU"Did your journey to my ship go without any problems?"
Vistenza Vyatt"Most certainly, Your Lordship/Ladyship! The chartists who took me here were quite forthcoming and... attentive to my exacting tastes. But most importantly, they were fast, as I wouldn't dare keep you waiting for a second longer than necessary."
YOU"Did your journey to my ship go without any problems?"continues where this line first appears above
YOU"Has Master Weisz briefed you on the task?"
Vistenza Vyatt"Oh yes, Your Lordship/Ladyship, the Choirmaster has described the ritual to me in a wealth of detail. I might even say a slight excess of it." Vistenza smiles coyly like a card-sharper at a gambling table. "I am familiar with certain techniques that could... curb the Immaterium's rapacious interest during the ritual."
ChoirmasterWeisz frowns gloomily as he listens to Vistenza's equivocations punctuated by glowing smiles. Shadows of dark suspicions have fallen on his face, but he keeps a mournful silence.

Choirmaster"Master Herimon, assigned to the chapel upon your orders for the purposes of performing the ritual, has almost finished his preparations, Lord Captain."
Master Herimon"Greetings, [Name] von Valancius. I will be honoured to serve my saviour." A middle-aged psyker bows to you passionately. His plump face carries many marks of indulging in all manner of vice.
YOU"I am your new lord/lady."
Master Herimon"And that is glorious, Your Lordship/Ladyship! A thousand thanks to you for liberating me from my former master! Living at the court of Governor Iskandor is... indescribable. The Immaterium itself whispers ideas for new perversions into his disturbed mind. Therefore, I am infinitely grateful to be delivered from him. My life belongs to you now."
YOU"I am your new lord/lady."continues where this line first appears above
YOU"We are about to do something dangerous."
Master Herimon"You saved me from a life of service that would have been a hundred times worse than the cruellest of deaths, and I am indebted to Your Lordship/Ladyship. If I have to lay down my life to repay that debt, then so be it."

YOU"So you say you have performed the ritual before for Theodora?"
Choirmaster"Many years ago. It was a time when Lady Theodora had become... anxious. Perhaps the Lord Inquisitor's interest in her affairs adversely affected her, shall we say, trust in her own subjects. She was expecting a betrayal, and eventually her paranoia brought her to me. I performed the ritual, but the Choir... ceased to exist."
YOU"What is the nature of this ritual?"
Choirmaster"It takes the entire Choir's power to invade such a prodigious number of minds at once. I weave their voices into a chord and steer it into the murky sea of other people's souls. Together, we read tens of thousands of thoughts, emotions, and intents, looking for the thing we are after. The seed of corruption you are interested in."
YOU"What is the nature of this ritual?"continues where this line first appears above
YOU"Why are you so worried about the ritual?"
Choirmaster"Lord Captain, do you know the proverb about staring too long into the abyss? What you are asking for is tantamount to plunging the entire Choir into that abyss. A ritual like that will require incredible focus from each of its participants. It will take a single careless thought, a single glance in the wrong direction, for the way back to be lost. Human minds fusing into one another, vitrified organs inside still-living bodies, perverse fantasies manifesting in the flesh... Nothing will stop the horrors of the warp from spreading all over the ship in the blink of an eye."
Choirmaster"And even if I agreed... it would be impossible. I would need a second powerful telepath as a defender to shield my mind. The last time, my best apprentice, Adeline, did that, but she is no longer with us. She was exceptionally talented, rivalling... even myself. Now I know of only one psyker in the entire Expanse who is her equal, but he is bound to the service of one of House Winterscale's planetary governors, and thus unavailable to us. Which makes your dangerous enterprise an impossibility."
YOU"What is the nature of this ritual?"continues where this line first appears above
YOU"Why are you so worried about the ritual?"continues where this line first appears above
YOU"How bad was it?"
Choirmaster"Worse than you can imagine, Your Lordship/Ladyship. It only took a fraction of a second lingering inside another mind for one of the Astropaths to lose control of their own. The affliction spread down the chain like fire. No one was spared. The minds of my charges could not withstand the tension. Their consciousnesses were caught in a vortex of alien thoughts. The fortunate ones died at once. As for the rest..."

YOU"How did you survive?"
Choirmaster"I managed to send out a call for help and did my best to contain the phantoms on my own before Lady Theodora arrived. I was the only survivor out of the entire Choir. Her Ladyship allowed me to spend a month in a secluded cell upon whose floor and walls I drew the most powerful protective hexagrams I knew. I was crushed. I was broken. And, worst of all, I was afraid. Afraid of meeting the same fate as Adeline and my other apprentices... An Astropath must never be afraid, Your Lordship/Ladyship. One who yields to fear dies and dooms those around them."

YOU"How did you replenish the Choir?"
Choirmaster"Lady Theodora bombarded the Adeptus Administratum for months with requests to provide her with a new Astropathic Choir. In the end, new voices did fill the chapel. They were never told what happened to the previous Choir, but... they have inklings. And I pray to the God-Emperor that they never find out the details of that tragedy."

YOU"How is a ritual like that even possible? It is akin to heresy!"
Choirmaster"It is not heresy, but it is indeed a dangerous tool that will only yield to a mighty hand. That time, things were going all too well. The Choir was many-voiced like never before. Adeline and my other talented apprentices sounded louder than the rest of Astropaths in all of the Expanse. We were strong and confident enough to take a bold gamble, and we lost."

Choirmaster"I—" The Choirmaster cowers, as if cornered. "I did find it. But the price... The price! Yes, Lady Theodora got the names she wanted, but was it worth it? The tragedy has remained a secret hidden within the chapel — but we were a hair's breadth away from it becoming an epitaph inscribed on the ship's remains."
YOU"You blame Theodora, but it was on your watch that the ritual led to a disaster."
ChoirmasterWeisz is silent for a few seconds, his face lowered toward the floor, his hands trembling. "You are right. I do not absolve myself of my own guilt. And may His punishment strike me if I forget about it for even a moment."

YOU"We can find a psyker who will help you perform the ritual."
Choirmaster"And who is it?" The Choirmaster's smile, though courteous, seems ever so slightly sarcastic.
YOU"How about Idira?"
Choirmaster"Absolutely not!" This is the first time you have ever heard the Choirmaster raise his voice. "She is a witch... an abomination! She will only make the situation worse! The beasts of the warp will sense her heresy-prone soul and descend upon us in droves."
YOU"How about Idira?"
continues where this line first appears above
YOU"Heinrix is a psyker. He could help."

ChoirmasterWeisz chews his lips, as though tasting your words. "I suppose you could, Your Lordship/Ladyship. However, I would not dare put your safety at risk. What kind of a Choirmaster gets their own Lord Captain killed?"
Choirmaster(sequence)
Abelard"Lord Captain, I do not for a moment doubt your powers, but I insist that you refrain from taking this unnecessary risk."
Idira"My little whispers are crazy excited at the mere possibility that your precious head will be the next one they get to drop by. You might want to think again if it's really what you want."
HeinrixThe Interrogator looks at you with unabashed curiosity. "Considering the combat experience we've had together, [Name], I'm sure that if anyone is up to a challenge like that, it's you. On the other hand, is it really worth it to tempt the Archenemy when you don't have to?"
Argenta"The Emperor would not send a gruelling challenge to one who was not up to it. Sometimes the thorniest path is also the most righteous one."
ChoirmasterWeisz's smile has a hint of condescension. "With all due respect to your unquestionable talents, Lord Captain, I need a psyker capable of working with a specific branch of psychic knowledge, that being telepathy."

A reverent expression has come over it, and there is a hint of a smile on his lips. "So be it, Your Lordship/Ladyship."
YOU"You mentioned knowing a powerful psyker employed by the Winterscales. Who is he?"
Choirmaster"Master Herimon is a seasoned telepath, but his lord would never part with such an incredibly valuable specialist. A sizeable amount of money will be necessary to organise Master Herimon's... escape."
YOU"Yes, I do have a few acquaintances with considerable experience in abduction. They charge but a modest fee for their services."
Choirmaster"As you please. Master Herimon will welcome the news of his forthcoming release. His present lord is quite... unpleasant. I will report back once Master Herimon has been brought on board."
YOU"I will hire professionals to set up his escape. Send a message to whoever ought to know."

YOU"I trust Idira and am appointing her your assistant. This is non-negotiable."
Choirmaster"You have signed our death sentence." Weisz's anger almost seems to ignite his otherworldly gaze, making it burn right through you. However, his face does not stay contorted with fury for long. There is a distinct coldness to his voice as he says, "Well, Your Lordship/Ladyship... Bring your witch here."
Choirmaster"Why, the abyss will do so much more than stare at us today. We will be throwing stones into it and begging it to devour us." The Choirmaster speaks the last few words with the bitter smirk of a condemned man who has just been told the day of his hanging.
YOU"I have no time for finding you an assistant, Weisz. Start the ritual at once."
ChoirmasterThe Choirmaster's face is twisted into a mask of horror, which quickly turns into a grimace of wholehearted anger. "This is a mistake, [Name]. You have no idea what you are dooming us to! Dooming this ship! And your dynasty!"
YOU[Raise your weapon] "What is this? Insubordination? You have your orders, Choirmaster, and you will follow them. Not one step back!"

ChoirmasterThe lines on Weisz's brow disappear. "Thank you, Your Lordship/Ladyship. I realise that this ritual may be your only chance of finding the mutineers, but is their plot so threatening as to risk dooming the entire vessel? I do not think so."
YOU"No, Weisz, wait. If this really is our only chance to find them, then we must not squander it."
ChoirmasterWeisz freezes with his mouth agape, then grimaces in irritation. "I should not have said anything. I... dare not object to your will. However, I must remind you that performing the ritual is impossible without a psychic protector."

IdiraBlood begins to seep out of the corners of Idira's eyes. "The poison of the undiscovered mystery is eating away at the steel insides and the lifeblood that courses within them. Within kindred flesh lurks a strange mind, waiting for its prey to fall asleep. What is tomorrow worth, O child of Humanity? Rouse the slumbering trouble and find out, or else carry on in ignorance until you lose yourself." As she regains her senses, Idira inhales sharply, then glances sideways at you: "Do think it over, Lord Captain. We're on the verge of letting the last thread slip from our hands. And if my little voices' whispers are anything to go by, without the ritual, things will get very bad."
HeinrixHeinrix casts a tired and almost irritated glance at you. "There have been millions of people who neglected to remove a hidden threat — and were themselves removed from existence before their due time as a result. Do you value your dynasty? For that may well become the price of indolence and cowardice. Perform the ritual."
JaeJae's expression becomes unusually serious. "I'm not keen on toying with the powers of the warp either, shereen. But ignoring the raised dagger in an enemy's hand is an idea I like even less."
Cassia"Internal strife and lurking enemies stole my home from me." Despite her efforts to hide it, you notice a slight tremble in the Lady Navigator's voice. "If that ritual can uncover the threat, then we must act on it. Better to accept the imminent casualties as a necessary sacrifice than to lose everything altogether."
Kibellah"Domin, the Undying One's will has led us to Veni'Zacchary, and He bids us walk a path that is both narrow and bloody. If we stray from this path now, our mark will disappear forever..."

Abelard"I remember that day, Lord Captain. When we arrived at the chapel, there was blood and human remains everywhere. But that was the least of the terrifying things we saw there."
Yrliet"The Asuryani spend decades tempering their spirits before touching the veil. You lack the gift of time, yet you seek to harness powers that are only too pleased with your ignorance."
YOU"We can find a psyker who will help you perform the ritual."

YOU"Reconsider what? I have not asked my question yet."
ChoirmasterYou feel a strange anxiety as the old man's burnt-out eyes seem to probe your inner self. "Your intentions are fairly easy for me to infer. You are looking for mutineers, and the only reason you would come to your Choirmaster is to order me to turn to the warp for answers."
Choirmaster"Your predecessor came to me with the same orders once. Nothing good came of it. Please believe me, Lord Captain, when I say a mountain of corpses was the least of the problems we faced that time."continues where this line first appears above
YOU"So you would rather not take part in the search for mutineers?"
Choirmaster"It is my wish to be useful to Your Lordship/Ladyship, but what you have come for... will put the ship in peril. A ritual of this kind can — and certainly will — go the worst way possible."

ChoirmasterYou summon your will and drive out the unpleasant sensation. The Choirmaster smiles sadly. "You shroud your mind well, Your Lordship/Ladyship, and yet I can guess why you have come. With all due respect, I am asking you to reconsider."
