Entry point 1 of 115
NPCThe soothing water caresses your senses, and your grateful muscles welcome the chance to rest. A pleasant languor spreads through your body as you allow yourself a moment of quiet relaxation.
YOU[Relax and close your eyes]
NPCThe tension slowly retreats as you bring yourself to complete stillness. Joint by joint, muscle by muscle, pore by pore — before long, you have surrendered the bastion of your body to the bliss of oblivion.
NPCTroubles, worries, loss — such things do not belong in this newly established dominion of tranquillity. There are only the infinite waters of weightlessness, in which, stripped of all things superficial, the mind of [Name] von Valancius drifts in silent bliss.
NPCIt is a conscious mind. What fills this consciousness?
YOU[Thoughts of his/her monumental duty to the Emperor. Such duty can only be fulfilled through service and death, for such is the price of Humanity's victory in the everlasting war]
NPCThe sacrifice of the many paves the way to a triumphant future for the titan that is the Protector of the Imperium. It is a heavy burden to be the ground beneath His feet, but it is glorious to serve such a righteous purpose in unity.
NPCThis moment of serenity soon fades. The body reclaims the mind, binding it once more to the familiar shell of flesh, sinew, and bone.
YOU[Relax and close your eyes]continues where this line first appears above
YOU[Address the Master of Ablutions] "I wish to see someone from my retinue."
Master of Ablutions"Which of them would you like me to summon, Your Lordship/Ladyship?"
YOU"Abelard. I simply cannot bathe without my loyal Seneschal."
Master of Ablutions"At once!"
AbelardAbelard claps his hands together in a business-like manner, and there's an ominous glint in his unaugmented eye. "Lord Captain, what a fortunate rarity to find you at leisure! Since you have nothing else to occupy your time, I will give you a lecture on the history of House von Valancius. I would not be doing my duty if I did not start from the beginning... "
YOU"Wait, why do I have to listen to a lecture?"
Abelard"You are the new head of this dynasty. It is unacceptable for a Rogue Trader to be ignorant of their origins."
YOU"Wait, why do I have to listen to a lecture?"
continues where this line first appears above
YOU"I promise that I will study the history of the dynasty in my spare time."
Abelard"I am afraid you will not have much time to spare from your duties. Lady Theodora made a similar promise, and I made the mistake of believing her — we never had the chance to speak on the matter again. We should make the most of this opportunity."
YOU"Wait, why do I have to listen to a lecture?"

YOU"I already know the dynasty's history."
NPC"Indeed? Well, in that case, it should not be difficult for you to name the dynasty's founder."
NPCAbelard is naive to think that you could fall into his trap. The name of the dynasty's founder has been forgotten over the millennia of its history. As if you could be stumped by something so trivial.
YOU[Give him a lecture — or rather, several lectures] "Their name has vanished into the darkness of the ages. Would you like to hear how it happened?"
AbelardAbelard's brow rises sharply. "I am exceedingly curious, Lord Captain. Please, do tell."
NPCYour lecture goes on for hours. You make sure not to omit even the most insignificant details, complementing your educational talk with fascinating historical anecdotes, an extensive analysis of your family tree, and precise descriptions of daily life on the worlds of your ancestors. By the end of it all, you notice Abelard beginning to doze off.
YOU"...and that is why this particular shade of blue was chosen for the von Valancius coat of arms."
AbelardSensing a pause in the lecture, Abelard shakes himself awake. "Hmm? I beg your pardon, Your Lordship/Ladyship. I was... lost in thought. A thoroughly captivating subject, yes. Well, I see that you are indeed remarkably versed in history, and therefore my presence is not required at the moment!" He hurriedly backs his way toward the exit.
NPCYou are alone once more. The Master of Ablutions stands by at the ready, patiently awaiting your command.

YOU[Address the enforcers] "You two, get in here! I require company and pleasant conversation."
Enforcer BranThe enforcers exchange a puzzled glance. "Do you mean... us, Your Lordship/Ladyship?"
YOU"There is no need to be shy. Relax with me for a moment."
Enforcer Bran"Orders received, Your Lordship/Ladyship! We will commence relaxation immediately!"
NPCThe enforcers are lean and muscular. They sit down awkwardly in the bathtub, clearly fighting the urge to stand at attention.
Enforcer Neema"What would you like to talk about, Your Lordship/Ladyship? We await your orders."
YOU"You seem tense. Your orders are to enjoy some of this food and amasec."
NPCThe enforcers are barely able to conceal their excitement as they shove delicious delicacies into their mouths, and wash them down with obscenely expensive drinks. They have never experienced anything like this before, and likely never will again. It is a feast they will not soon forget — a story they will tell to their grandchildren someday.

YOU"I wish to be fed."
Enforcer Neema"It will be done, Lord Captain!"
NPCThe woman reverently places slices of exotic fruits and rich-smelling cheeses into your mouth, and the man brings a cup of amasec to your lips to wash it all down. They do everything for you except chew and swallow, but you suspect that if you were to give them the order, they would find a way to do that for you as well.

YOU"Tell me about yourselves. Do you have any other responsibilities besides guarding these chambers?"
Enforcer Neema"For hundreds of years, our clan has been responsible for ensuring the Rogue Trader's safety during times of leisure and relaxation." The enforcer's voice is filled with pride. "I guard the bathchamber, just as my grandmother did before me. She trained me herself and instructed me in my duties."
Enforcer Neema"This bathchamber can be more dangerous than a battlefield sometimes! You can slip on a wet tile, you can choke and drown... If the water is too hot, you can burn yourself, and if it's too cold, you can freeze... There have even been cases where angry machine spirits have released sparks of their fury in the water. And of course, there have been numerous assassination attempts and—"
Enforcer BranThe woman stops abruptly as the other enforcer loudly clears his throat.
YOU"It is reassuring to know my enforcers are prepared for anything."

Enforcer Neema"When we're off-duty, we train, maintain our equipment, and pray at regulation-approved intervals."
Enforcer Neema"If we do have some time to ourselves, we might play some tan-to-lo. And Bran over here carves things out of soap scraps." She nods at her partner. "Though for the most part, we barely get enough time for rest, let alone for leisure."
YOU[Pass Bran a piece of soap and a knife] "I demand a demonstration, Bran."
Enforcer BranThe enforcer looks slightly flustered, but he quickly gets to work. After a little while, he presents you with a bust of the Emperor about half the size of your palm. The Emperor's visage has been recreated with incredible precision and attention to detail — the small carving surpasses the work of many a skilled sculptor.
YOU"I will have it placed in my study."
Enforcer BranThe enforcer is speechless with amazement. His eyes shine with pride. "I am not worthy of such an honour! Thank you, Your Lordship/Ladyship."

Argenta"[Name], are you conditioning your body with water treatments? How commendable! Allow me to share some of the water exercises I learned at the Schola Progenium!" Argenta does not wait for a reply, but immediately launches into a series of detailed instructions.
YOU"But I do not..."
YOU"Argenta, hold on a moment..."
YOU"Perfect!"
NPCArgenta briskly explains how to stretch your muscles correctly. She makes you repeat each exercise multiple times as she teaches you the best way to do bends and squats. Her eyes are alight with righteous fire and her voice rings out with conviction — she shows the same dedication to completing each exercise as she does to destroying heretics.
YOU"Cassia. I want her to paint my portrait."
Master of Ablutions"At once!"

Master of Ablutions"At once!"
Heinrix"[Name], is this a matter of terrible urgency, or..." An exasperated expression crosses Heinrix's face when he sees you relaxing in the water. "...or did you simply call me here for your own amusement? On second thought, don't answer. I think I have assessed the situation for myself."
Heinrix"I suppose you desire entertainment. Very well. I will give you something to occupy your time — a simple game of intellect that is often played in our conclave. I will give you a fact about my life, and you will have to discern whether it is a truth or a lie. Shall we begin? I betrayed my family and caused the death of innocent people, and I was never held accountable for my actions."
YOU"Kibellah. I wish to learn more about the Tenets of the Web."
Master of Ablutions"At once!"
KibellahKibellah silently appears by your side. "You asked to see me, Domin'[Name]? Do you wish to learn more of the cult's rites? Very well. Since you are in the water, I can introduce you to a rare discipline of the Bloodspun Web known as controlled self-drowning. Few receive this honour, with water being so precious on a ship. Still, it has opened my eyes to many truths."
YOU"That sounds like it could be dangerous."
Kibellah"Every step we take is dangerous, yet still we choose to walk. If done correctly, the ritual is simple and will cause you little pain."
YOU"That sounds like it could be dangerous."

YOU"Intriguing. Teach me."
Kibellah"Close your eyes and trust me. Reject your fear and remember — you have carried death within you since birth. This ritual is simply a meeting between you and your oldest friend."
NPCYou close your eyes and hear a quiet splash — Kibellah has entered the pool. She puts her hands around your neck and gently pushes you under the water. As your lungs start to burn, she pulls you back to the surface, allowing you to take a single breath of air before she begins to drown you again. This process repeats several times, and she holds you beneath the surface a little longer with each plunge. The fourth descent lasts an eternity — but her hands prevent you from resurfacing.
YOU"I do not think I want to try this particular discipline."

Master of Ablutions"At once!"
Solomorne"So, 'unwind' is not a code word, and you are not in any danger?" Solomorne looks around the bathchamber in faint bewilderment. "So you truly want to know how Arbitrators spend their time off duty... Well, why not? I suggest a little shooting contest — we'll use empty bottles as targets."
YOU"And that is your idea of fun? How deathly dull."
Solomorne"Fun? Not at all. Downtime between missions is for honing one's combat skills."

Solomorne"Let's keep it simple — three rounds, three shots. Whoever is the better shot wins. You go first."
YOU"Three rounds isn't enough, it could end in a draw."
Solomorne"We'll do it this way: if it's a draw after two rounds, if you land the third shot, the victory is yours. In Calixis we called this the attacker's advantage — a good way of teaching Arbitrators that if you get the chance to shoot first, you must hit the target."

YOU"Eogunn. I am in a philosophical mood."
Master of Ablutions"At once!"
Eogunn"I find the choice of venue for our meeting somewhat unconventional, but I don't deny that the setting is conducive to philosophical contemplation. So tell me, [Name], what topic is currently occupying your inquiring mind?"
YOU"Just to confirm: you aren't going to dunk yourself in the bath and begin your cleaning protocols, are you?"
Eogunn"Certainly not. Due to the design features of the blessed galvanic cell housed within my abdomen, direct contact with the water-filled tanks will result in an uncontrolled discharge of the Motive Force. Causing the death of the Rogue Trader is the very last thing I would wish. What is more, the sacrament of disinfection, which I perform regularly upon exiting my lab, renders any additional hygiene procedures unnecessary."

YOU[Drink] "To your good health, Eogunn."
EogunnThe Manipulus mirrors your actions, draining his goblet. "I am registering increased catalytic processes in my liver and an acute reaction in my peripheral vasculature. Inhibition processes in my nervous system are suppressed." The Tech-Priest raises an eyebrow in confusion. "Could this be some sort of premedication for enhanced nutrient absorption?" He shifts his gaze to the servo-skull hovering nearby. "I don't see what's got you so amused, Nuncius."

Eogunn"I'm afraid my taste buds have atrophied considerably, so I cannot gratify you with anything other than my already stated findings. However, I do wish to note that tasting nutrients in combination is a most satisfying process, regardless of their form." Eogunn smiles pointedly. "I suggest we proceed to the more substantive portion of our conversation, not least because my colleague is beginning to grow somewhat bored."

Cassia"I have never painted people before. But I am willing to try if you insist."
CassiaCassia picks up her brush. The two of you spend the next half hour engaged in small talk, and her awkwardness soon gives way to an intense focus as she becomes immersed in her art.
Cassia"This painting... It may not be what you had in mind. Still, this is how I see you and your colours." The canvas is a whirlwind of brightly coloured paints. The outline of a human figure is suggested through broad, colourful strokes and fluid shapes. You would be hard-pressed to call it a portrait — but the series of abstract images and impressions do vaguely resemble your form.

Cassia"This is how I see your ship. The emotions of the crew, the void beyond the stained glass, the bustle and noise of the bridge, and... my own experiences here." The canvas is a whirlwind of different colours. The colours give form to a variety of abstract images and shapes. Bright and dark paints contrast with one another in intricate patterns and designs. If I have another drink, I think I'll fall right into this bathtub... And you don't want a corpse in your pool, do you? Anyway... What was I talking about? Oh, right. I think... I need to get some air."continues where this line first appears above

NPCYou try to keep watch for Jae's tricks, but... Wait! Is this the third time you've taken this piece? Or are you seeing triple? And why is Jae clapping as though she has won?
Jae"Are you all right, shereen? Here, have some water. Do not worry! I will gladly play another round with you later if you want to try and even the score. Right now though, you should get some rest. Oh... and for the love of the Exalted One, do not fall asleep in the bathtub."continues where this line first appears above

NPCSolomorne makes a gesture toward the target, and Glaito makes a lightning-fast leap. The bottle shatters in the cyber-mastiff's powerful jaws.
YOU"Hey! That's cheating!"
Solomorne"You think so? Glaito is my weapon, which means I can use him." Solomorne's face is expressionless, but his voice sounds slightly smug.

Solomorne"You like it when the odds are stacked against you? Admirable. I accept the challenge."
YOU"You must give me a chance to redeem myself. If I hit the bottle on the enforcer's head, victory is mine."
Solomorne"This is beginning to feel more like a gambling competition than a training session — but, very well, proceed."

NPCYou begin to sing, guided by your own emotion more than any specific rhythm or motif. Every now and then, Yrliet changes the flow of the melody, encouraging you to add something new to the song. A warm feeling settles over you like a gentle embrace, and Yrliet's expression softens.
Yrliet"We created an unusual tapestry together, elantach. It is unlike any I have woven with my kin. You lack experience, but you understand the purpose of the weave, and in our brief melody, I found peace." Yrliet sounds almost surprised, and she falls silent for a moment. "I must leave now.
