Entry point 1 of 6
Blind"Rogue... Trader?" The old man's face widens in astonishment, and he bows reverently, whispering, "I've waited... I've waited for so long, hoping to one day serve you, Lord Captain! The crate—"
Vat GuardA cold voice filled with the promise of death mutters, "Pathetic fool. That's our secrecy gone right down the shitter. Folks, we're gonna have to make some noise." A common worker, her face so nondescript it looks almost scrubbed off, is aiming a weapon at you that she produced seemingly out of nowhere. "Leave no witnesses!"

BlindThe old man shakes his grey head vehemently. "Take me for a fool, do you? What would the Rogue Trader be doing down here? Liar!"
YOU"I will simply look into that crate of yours. I will not take anything."
Blind"No!" The old man shakes his head furiously. "Retribution! You won't escape His retribution for this!"
YOU"I will simply look into that crate of yours. I will not take anything."

YOU"I did not mean to alarm you. I simply wish to learn more about my people's lives."
Blind"Your people? Could it be... Our Lord Captain, our benefactor, is it really you?" The old man looks shocked. "Our gracious lord/lady, we know you well! Your charity gets us through the day, and we pray for you always! But what are you doing down in this... Please, hurry away before they know you're here! They are plotting something terrible. This crate, it's where they hide their—"

YOU[Place a stack of ration cards in his mug] "Perhaps a gift for you will convince you to show me?"
BlindThe old man scoops up the greasy cards, grins happily, and moves aside to count them, smacking his lips. "Benefactor! Nourisher! May the Lord Captain protect you!"
BlindYou look into the crate and see a familiar gleam — that of weapons-grade plasteel, polished and ready to kill. The old man was leaning against several brand-new autoguns wrapped in greasy rags.

BlindThe old man carries on listening to the clamour of the slum for a long time, whispering an almost silent prayer to the God-Emperor all the while.

BlindAn old man in pitiful rags listens intently to the sound of your footsteps. A stinking piece of cloth is wrapped around his eyes, with greenish pus oozing out from under it. The old man lays his trembling hands protectively on the heap of junk that serves as his bed as well as his table. An empty beggar's mug makes a clinking sound next to his withered leg.
YOU[Throw a strip of dried ration meat into his mug] "Here. Have something to eat."
BlindThe old man ravenously sinks his remaining teeth into the meat's tough fibres, but soon gives up on chewing and swallows the piece whole. "Could this be a true miracle of the Emperor? Or... is it just another dream?"
YOU[Throw a strip of dried ration meat into his mug] "Here. Have something to eat."

YOU"What happened to your eyes?"
Blind"The void rats gnawed them out while I was asleep. And the sewer water my wounds were washed with was infected, turns out. The pain became a stinging feeling that wouldn't go away... And only got worse."

YOU"How does a blind old man manage to survive in a place like this?"
Blind"People help me. Good people. Not-so-good ones, too." He sweeps his withered arm vacantly around the slum.

YOU"There, next to you — weapons are usually transported in crates like those. I want to look inside."
Blind"Weapons?" The old man's voice sounds frightened and pitiful. "How would something like that wind up in our bottom-of-the-bilge compartment?"

YOU"What is that junk you are making such an effort to hide?"
BlindThe old man sinks his chipped fingernails into the rotted crate. "I heard the sound of your footsteps. The creak of your well-made soles against the metal is pleasing to the ear. You walk with confidence. You have everything you need. Don't take everything from this old man who has nothing."

Abelard"Lord Captain, the only thing he has to share with you is a long list of infectious diseases. May I offer you a breathing mask?" Abelard produces an actual gold-encrusted mask from his pouch.
BlindThe skin shrunken around the man's hunched skeleton is almost translucent. That heap of junk really is likely to be everything he owns in this life.

BlindOr rather, that is what someone with no experience in the art of smuggling would think if they were in your place. Hiding contraband in caches without leaving a watcher is a short-sighted gamble, as there is always a chance that some lucky scoundrel or patrolman might stumble upon the goods. Someone suitably repulsive and miserable, like this old man, often acts as the perfect deterrent.

BlindNo matter how innocuous or wretched the old man's appearance, it will take more than that to deceive you. Trained always to look for criminal intent first and foremost, you cast a suspicious eye at the crates — these look too much like reinforced containers used for transporting weapons.
SolomorneGlaito's whole body leans in the direction of the crates sitting next to the man, and Solomorne directs your attention toward them with a nod. "Some curious things he has stored in there. I suggest you give the old man a good shake and see if he is as harmless as he wants to appear."
