NPCThe Merov Penal Legion. Desperate thugs rounded up from the prisons of the hive world of Merov in Calixis and commanded by brutal officer-wardens. You have heard tales of these regiments.
NPCBaffled by the presence of an Astra Militarum penal legionnaire on an ancient shuttle, your squad returns to the flagship. One thing is now clear, however — the world where Seberian drew his final breath is close at hand.
Entry point 4 of 9
NPCA prayer for the dying machine spirits grants them the fortitude for one final act, and the voice becomes clearer: "Merov... Penal Legion. The one who requisitioned us.. Seberian von Valancius is dead. We have no means of comm... not found in orbit. We have been abandoned... God-Emperor, have mercy... Claim us... before the warp... finishes us off!"
YOU"I recognise these numbers. A memory from my old life."
NPCAlthough the codes being transmitted are centuries out of date, you are able to make sense of them: an Astra Militarum regiment is requesting assistance and reporting that retreat from their present position is impossible.

YOU[Trying to amplify the signal]
YOU[Dispatch a squad to the shuttle]
NPCThe reconnaissance squad soon reports that they have located the crashed shuttle with a barely recognisable Astra Militarum insignia on the hull.
NPCAfter breaching the hull with lascutters, the reconnaissance force discovers the skeleton of the lone pilot. Judging by his injuries, he died long before the crash.
NPCThe extracted vox-recording is delivered aboard your flagship, where your servants manage to restore it. In it, Private Ruban Khroshovach reports that the 32nd Regiment of the Merov Penal Legion, requisitioned by Seberian, was left without a ship and supplies on GH-89-717 after the Rogue Trader's death. The message ends with the phrase: "Atonement for the one."

NPCIt is a miracle that the shuttle vox's machine spirit is able to fulfil its duties at all. But the years have seen the voice grow quieter and quieter, and now it is impossible to make out the mutterings of the ancient spirit.

NPCThey were requisitioned by Seberian — a crucial detail. It is another trace of your ancestor.

NPC"Lord Captain, our augurs detected a faint emergency signal. The source was traced to a crashed Valkyrie. Its vox-systems are still transmitting the message. Transferring the signal now."
NPCA stream of hissing crackles out of the vox-caster. From time to time, an exhausted male voice breaks through the interference, reciting a series of codes.

Pasqal"I bear witness to the steadfastness of these machine spirits, who sing their hymn of functioning even in their death throes."
Jae"This code... it looks familiar. I think this might a variant of Astra Militarum encoding. Each regiment maintains its own, of course, but the underlying principles are similar. It appears to be a distress call."
