Entry point 1 of 11
NPCStrapped to the enforcer's belt is a weapon that you easily recognise as a plasma pistol. Despite the expensive finish, the gun is clearly a combat weapon — the grip, bearing the monogram "IS," is covered with scratches and scuffs, indicating frequent use.
NPCThe wounded man turns his head toward you, staring at you in disbelief out of his one good eye. The other eye is buried under clotted blood and swelling, which flanks a deep gash cutting across his eyebrow and temple. His pale face, with its sharp and delicate features, cannot possibly be the face of a commoner. "Isimond Sauerback. To what do I owe the pleasure?"
YOU[Persuade Isimond to do as you command]
NPCThe wounded man's face twists in a grimace of poorly concealed hatred. "Blackmail, then. I'm forced to accept your decision and submit to it, but don't think I'll forget this moment even for a second."

YOU"Are you the Master-at-Arms serving the von Valancius dynasty?"
NPC"No. I command the enforcers as part of the palace defences and hold the rank of captain." The man shows you the insignia embroidered on his sleeve. "I lack the noble status required for a higher appointment. A minor setback."
YOU"I believe that talent always finds a way to rise to the top."
NPC"Nobles judge their servants by their deeds. I have done enough for Rogue Trader von Valancius to endow me with a title." The intact portion of Isimond Sauerback's face maintains a completely impenetrable expression. "It is only a matter of time."

YOU"How did you come by such a grievous wound?"
NPC"Stray shard. A frag grenade explosion grazed me. Thank the Throne my eye is intact, or the enforcers would have lost one of their few competent commanders."

YOU[Take a closer look at Sauerback's injury]
NPCIt is a stab wound from a glancing blow — a long and narrow blade pierced and tore through the skin. The swelling and various injuries to the blood vessels make the injury look far more gruesome than it is. If a shard from a frag grenade really had struck him, it would have taken out a good third of Sauerback's skull.

YOU"Are there any rulebreakers among the soldiers of the penal regiment?"
NPC"The soldiers are fully aware that the God-Emperor has granted them one last chance at redemption. Anyone who fails to wise up to this fact gets shot. Even Jarub Vukchik, a sergeant whose record of disciplinary infractions used to be extensive, now knows better than to steal the regiment's property. If so much as a lho-stick goes missing, he'll be put in a cell or in front of a firing squad, depending on the regiment's current losses and needs."

YOU"By the power conferred on me by the Seneschal, I grant you leave to preserve your honour and confess your crime."
NPCIn the perfect silence that follows, you distinctly hear the grinding of Sauerback's teeth. "Yes. It was I who killed him, but not of my own will, but at the behest of Camilla Drivestem, Duchess of Dargonus."
YOU"How exactly did you do it?"
NPC"Plasma. Burned straight through." The wounded man grudgingly bites out each word. "Wanted to catch him unawares and hit him from behind, but the scoundrel was waiting for me — and he managed to leave me a small memento with his sword. That didn't save him from my second shot. I tossed the body off the bridge to avoid leaving any evidence."
YOU"How exactly did you do it?"continues where this line first appears above
YOU"Why did you kill him?"
NPC"The duchess decided to settle some old scores with the Gapraks. She needed an agent who knew how to hold a gun... and their tongue. I agreed. My payment was to be a hereditary title of nobility. I may have made myself a criminal, but my heirs will be aristocrats. My conscience is a small price to pay for such a boon."

YOU"It's over, Sauerback. You will stand trial for this."
NPC"Then such is my fate." The captain falls silent and turns away, making it clear that the conversation is over.
YOU"When the time comes, you will support me in my endeavours, regardless of anyone else's displeasure. I will give you a sign."

NPC"Utterly certain," answers the enforcer at once, bowing his head. "I and all my line will serve Humanity with redoubled zeal, observing the Imperial Creed with impeccable rigour."

NPCAfter examining you more closely, Sauerback's eye brightens with interest. "So you're the one House Gaprak sent to Seberian's aid. The scouts reported your company was destroyed on the approach to the residence. A regrettable incident, but nothing to worry about — the Gapraks are famous for their psykers and Astropaths, so they must know you survived. New troops will be dispatched shortly."
YOU"Your information is incorrect, Captain. The Gaprak family tradition is to serve in the ranks of the Imperial Navy."
NPCThe inflamed skin on Sauerback's face stretches tightly in a gleeful grin. "Wrong answer, spy. Whoever you are, you are not of House Gaprak. Or else you would know that the Gapraks have been associated with the Adeptus Mechanicus for decades." He points a plasma pistol at you.
NPC"Die." A sizzling lump of plasma slams into your chest, turning the world around you into nothingness.
YOU"Alas, there has been no word from them."

YOU"You are mistaken, Sauerback. The Gapraks' patrimony lies in a forge world where the dynasty's steel might is made under the eye of the Adeptus Mechanicus. However, you are forgiven."
NPC"Yes, I must have misremembered." Sauerback shrugs. "You're right, the Gapraks' ancestral spaceport on Vheabos VI was erected under the aegis of the servants of the Omnissiah." The captain's healthy eye narrows slightly.
YOU"Vheabos VI? It's a tiny penal world, but not a spaceport by any means."
NPC"I see. It seems I was misinformed." The captain surveys you from head to toe with a cold, scrutinising look. "Hardly surprising."
NPC"Well, in that case, all that remains is to offer up a prayer of thanks for your survival. May the God-Emperor bless the deeds of the most noble House Gaprak, both those already accomplished and those yet to come. I am sure His unseen presence will never leave you."
YOU"May His Light be with us."
NPC"Well, that will do. I am now willing to answer questions, my lord/lady." The captain locks his fingers together with a look of satisfaction.

NPC"Whatever you are, you are no Gaprak." Sauerback aims his plasma pistol at you. Any member of House Gaprak would be at pains to emphasise their piety however they could. You don't sound very pious."

NPC"Inquisitor af Irramon has truly underestimated the von Valancius dynasty." Sauerback draws out each word with gloating pleasure. "Once — when he dared to storm the palace. Twice — when he believed that Seberian's subjects would betray their master. And thrice..." He points the plasma pistol at you. Pasqal"This statement is false. The construction of a spaceport upon Vheabos VI is without utility. For the needs of the Cult Mechanicus, the logistical support of forge worlds holds the highest priority." Pasqal's optical implant flickers several times. "I acknowledge, however, that for laypeople this particular chain of logic is not entirely self-evident."
Eogunn"The source of your data is woefully inaccurate, Captain. The scale of the penal world of Vheabos VI is much too modest to warrant the Cult Mechanicus expending such a great deal of effort and resources on it. Only forge worlds receive that honour, as a rule."
YOU"The Gapraks are servants of the Adeptus Administratum. Our blood is unsullied by the psyker taint."
